I thought I had seen almost everything in Korean beauty. Then, while browsing Korean skincare products, I came across something that immediately made me stop scrolling: an octopus-shaped gua sha.
I actually laughed when I first saw it.
A gua sha shaped like an octopus? At first, it looked more like a cute little sea creature than a beauty tool. But then I looked closer at the tiny legs and realized they were designed to massage different areas of the scalp and body. Suddenly, I wanted to try it.
It also reminded me of something I had seen Korean actress Lee Si-young do—starting her beauty routine with a scalp massage and then working down toward the neck and face. That made me wonder: maybe the secret isn't just taking care of your face. Maybe we should be paying more attention to the scalp, neck, and muscles around the face, too.
What Is a Gua Sha?
Gua sha is a traditional massage technique that has become a major part of modern K-beauty. Today, you can find everything from flat facial stones to combs and playful shapes like my new favorite, the octopus.
A gua sha massage tool is generally used with gentle pressure and gliding movements over the skin. For facial massage, the goal is not to physically reshape your bones. Instead, gentle massage can help you relax facial tension and temporarily reduce the appearance of puffiness, leaving your face looking more refreshed and defined.
And honestly, after spending hours looking at a laptop or phone, my neck and scalp can definitely use some attention.
Why I Love the Octopus Gua Sha
The best thing about the octopus design is that it makes a normally boring routine feel fun.
Instead of thinking, “Ugh, I need to do my skincare,” I find myself thinking, “Where's my little octopus?”
The multiple rounded points can be used to gently massage the scalp, temples, neck, and shoulders. I especially like using it at night while watching TV.
Five minutes. That's it.
No complicated routine. No appointment. Just a little massage while relaxing.
A Gua Sha for the Whole Family
This is also why I think a Korean gua sha massage tool makes a surprisingly good family beauty product.
My mom can use it for a relaxing scalp massage. My husband can use it after a long day at the computer. And I can use it as part of my nighttime K-beauty routine.
It doesn't have to be a “women's beauty product.” A scalp massage feels good regardless of your age or gender.
How I Use Mine
I start with my scalp and use gentle movements around the crown, sides, and temples. Then I move down toward the neck and shoulders.
For the face, I use a separate facial gua sha with moisturizer or facial oil so there is enough slip and I don't drag the skin.
The most important rule is don't press too hard. Gua sha should feel relaxing—not painful. You don't need to leave red marks to know that it is working.
The Bottom Line
I bought my octopus gua sha because I thought it was cute and funny.
But after actually using it, I realized that its biggest attraction isn't the unusual shape. It's how easy it is to turn a few minutes of scalp and facial massage into a relaxing daily ritual.
Maybe that's one reason Korean beauty is so much fun. Sometimes a product can be effective-looking, practical, and completely adorable at the same time.
And yes, every time I see that little octopus sitting next to my skincare products, I still smile.
Who knew my next K-beauty obsession would have eight legs?
