A few days ago, I was shopping at Costco when I noticed something that made me stop in my tracks: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser.

I knew the product. I had seen the Dokdo line many times when shopping at Olive Young in Korea. But seeing the word “Dokdo” on a Korean skincare product shelf in an American Costco made me think about how differently that name might sound to an American shopper.

If you're Korean, you immediately know what Dokdo means.

But if you're seeing the name for the first time, you might wonder:

“Why is an island the name of a facial cleanser?”

You might even assume that the product is made with water or some special natural resource directly from Dokdo.

The answer is a little more interesting.

What Does “Dokdo” Have to Do With Skincare?

Round Lab's 1025 Dokdo line is inspired by the deep seawater around Ulleungdo and Dokdo in Korea's East Sea. According to Round Lab, the line uses mineral-rich deep seawater sourced near Ulleungdo and Dokdo. The company says this water contains minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and zinc.

So yes, there is a connection between Dokdo and the ingredients.

But for Koreans, the word “Dokdo” carries a meaning that goes far beyond skincare.

Dokdo Means Something More to Koreans

Dokdo is a small group of rocky islands in the East Sea, located east of the Korean peninsula.

For many Koreans, simply hearing the word Dokdo brings an immediate emotional response. It isn't just a beautiful island. It has become a powerful symbol of Korean identity and sovereignty.

The Korean government maintains that Dokdo is an integral part of Korean territory historically, geographically, and under international law. Japan also maintains a claim to the islands, making Dokdo a longstanding and sensitive point in Korea-Japan relations.

Growing up Korean, I remember how familiar the phrase “Dokdo is our land” was. It appeared in songs, school activities, public campaigns, and everyday conversations.

So when I see “1025 Dokdo” on a skincare bottle, I don't see just a geographic name.

I feel a little sense of pride.

Why Would a Skincare Company Use the Name?

That's what makes the product especially interesting.

Round Lab has turned a familiar Korean place into part of its brand story. The company explains that the “1025” refers to October 25, known in Korea as Dokdo Day, while the product line connects skincare with the clean, mineral-rich deep seawater associated with the region.

For a Korean customer, the name can immediately create an emotional connection.

For an American customer, however, it may simply look like an unusual place name.

And that's actually what I find fascinating.

A bottle sitting on a Costco shelf can quietly introduce a little piece of Korean geography and culture to someone who may never have heard of Dokdo before.

More Than Just a Cleanser

The next time you see Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser at Costco or another American retailer, take a second look at the name.

It's not just a clever skincare name.

It's a product inspired by a place that carries natural, cultural, and emotional significance for many Koreans.

And as a Korean living in America, I have to admit that seeing “Dokdo” sitting among all those international beauty products makes me smile.

A little piece of Korea has made its way onto the American beauty shelf.

And perhaps that's one of the most interesting things about K-beauty: sometimes, you're not just buying skincare.

You're taking home a little story from Korea.
